The Full Moon in August is called Sturgeon Moon because of the great number of this huge freshwater fish that could once be found in lakes and rivers in North America. Madonna even had a hit song based upon this fish:
Like a Sturgeon
Caught for the very first time…
Our hike begins on Serrania Ridge, a pocket of parkland on the suburban edge of Woodland Hills. The ridge’s name—and its geography—seem to be in limbo. Serrania Ridge is also called Woodland Ridge. Is it a part of the Santa Monica Mountains? Or is it a part of Chalk Hill to the northeast?
We can contemplate these questions as we roller-coaster up and down–mostly up–partaking views of the Santa Monica mountains rising before us, Calabasas hills to the right of us, Chalk Hill the the left of us and the west San Fernando Valley behind us. After about 1 mile we cross dirt Mulholland and continue on a steep trail to the top of the ridge where we’ll turn onto a service road and head up to the water tank, watch the full moon rise and party.
